The Square Tavern II Revisited
In his newest watercolor, “The Square Tavern II, Revisited” 2019-2020, Santoleri revisits the subject of his 1987 painting of the historic Square Tavern on N. Newtown Street (Route 252) & Goshen Roads in Newtown Square.
The Square Tavern. aka The Square Inn, located in Newtown Square on the Road to Goshen, depicts the John West House, an 18th Century licensed “public house of entertainment.” Nick’s 1987 painting features a man on horseback in the background to instill a sense of timelessness to the scene.
The Inn was the childhood home of Colonial portrait artist, Benjamin West, the tenth son of the proprietor. Native Americans taught young Benjamin how to make paint by mixing clay from the river bank with bear grease in a pot.
