The Nittany Lion statue is a limestone sculpture of a mountain lion created by sculptor Heinz Warneke in 1942.  Mountain lions are believed to have roamed the area of Mount Nittany until the late 19th century. The Nittany Lion has been the mascot of Penn State University and its athletic teams since 1907 when a student, H. D. “Joe” Mason, decided that Penn State was one of the few great universities without a symbol, and created the Nittany Lion.  One of the most photographed sites on campus, the Lion sculpture sits in a wooded area on the University Park Campus.
