My Earliest Medium
“As a child, the pencil was my earliest medium. At my grandparent’s house, I remember they had tablets without lines. My grandmother would sit me down with a few sharp pencils and a couple of blank pages and for a few hours, my ADD was under control. I became mesmerized, drawing everything from the cat to the tea kettle. Because the pencil is a medium of memory; a vehicle that can take me from a pencil sketch on a paper plate to a master drawing on high-quality Bristol.”
“Not only is pencil drawing the best way to express myself creatively, it also allows me to take non-verbal notes of a scene. Quick sketches help me to gather a sense of composition and record tonal values of a scene. In fact, nearly all of my work in watercolor, oil and acrylic begins as a pencil sketch.”
