Watercolor Paintings
When by Artist Nick Santoleri sits down to create watercolor paintings, he focuses on four things: composition, color, lighting and subject matter. “When people walk into my studio, they frequently look at my work and say, ‘that’s a watercolor?’ The reason my watercolors look more realistic is my use of various techniques; like wet on wet, dry brush, and diluting. As a result, I am able to make my watercolor paintings transcend the medium. This is my goal as a realist artist.”

Influences
“In the tradition of one of my greatest influences, Andrew Wyeth, I mix my techniques to create the most realism possible. Wet on wet is great for water, snow, and sky; while dry brush will bring trees to life. Wyeth’s combination of techniques resulted in his ability to create watercolor paintings that ran the full spectrum from washy sketches to intense masterpieces. It was this quality that most influenced my own work.”
“More importantly, I begin in pencil. I also love the work of Albrecht Durer, who used the watercolors as an extension of the original drawing. These can best be seen in his paintings: A Young Hare, A Crab and The Tuft of Grass. Like Durer, each of my watercolor paintings begin as a drawing and the watercolor likewise becomes an extension of that drawing.”
